About 12.30am on January 9, 2021, emergency services were called to Edward River Rd, Mathoura, following reports of a crash.
Police were told five teenage boys – aged between 14 and 16 – were travelling in a white Toyota utility, when the driver reportedly swerved to avoid hitting kangaroos and lost control of the vehicle.
Mathoura's Harry McCormick, 16, died at the scene. The four other occupants of the car were not physically injured.
Officers from Murray River Police District established a crime scene and started inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
"The crime scene didn't match up and correspond to initial versions of the story, so after re-interviewing the teens, we identified the driver," Inspector Paul Huggett said.
Following inquiries, a 16-year-old Victorian boy was issued a court attendance notice for negligent driving occasioning death and learner driver unaccompanied.
He is due to appear in a children’s court on Wednesday, April 7, 2021.
