Regional train fares slashed from end of March

Victorians will be able to purchase one-way regional train fares for less than $10, in a move likely to prompt car commuters to seriously consider alternatives to driving.

From March 31, one-way regional trips will be capped at $9.20; a welcome reprieve for city commuters from Echuca who currently pay between $30 and $40 for a one-way fare to Melbourne.

The new pricing comes after the December introduction of two new return weekday train services between Echuca and Melbourne.

The decision to make regional train fares comparable to metropolitan Melbourne daily fares eventuated from the Labor Government’s election promise to reduce fees.

Prior to the November state election, both major political parties promised to slash regional train prices if elected.

After the last fare cut in 2007, V/Line reported a surge in customers using train services when fees were reduced by 20 per cent.

The cheaper fares will come into effect from March 31.

Weekday services depart to Melbourne from Echuca Station at 7.16am, 11.04am and 3.04pm, on Saturday at 7.15am and 03.54pm and at 8.54am and 3.54pm on Sunday.
