Headlining the results was Moama’s Marilyn Stephenson who won the women’s state singles as well as the Champion of Champions women’s final.
Beating Golden Square’s Taylah Marron 25 shots to 10 in the state singles, Stephenson backed it up with nerves of steel in her champions clash, accounting for White Hills’ Carmel Jansen by a narrow four shots.
Rich River also came away from the weekend with an outstanding win, with Gerry Devlin, Colin Hayes, Peter Nesbitt and Daryl Weymouth teaming up to take out the Men’s Fours by nine shots against a composite Bendigo team.
Speaking after the win, Hayes said the team was “pretty chuffed” with its successes at the weekend.
“Going into the competition, we didn’t have any expectations, we wanted to enjoy ourselves and play good bowls, and if you play all right the rewards come,” Hayes said.
“In saying that, we weren’t there to make up the numbers, we had some handy combinations. But in bowls, you’ve got to play good bowls with a bit of luck in there as well.
“None of it’s easy, and it won’t get easier from here.”
The team will move into the final 16 stage of the state finals, with the competition shifting into a knock-out format from here on out.
“We’ll turn up and see what happens, when you’re down to the final 16 in the state, you’re coming up against some good teams as well,” Hayes said.
Rounding out the outstanding results for Campaspe Valley bowlers, Moama’s Jim Hogan claimed the Men’s 60 and Over singles with a four-shot win over South Bendigo’s Wayne Marwood.
Several other bowlers made the final but were unlucky not to come away with the win.
A composite team consisting of Chris Frampton, Jenny Tonta, Chris Taylor and Joan Moss found themselves on the wrong side of the Women’s Fours result, finishing eight shots behind the Bendigo team.
Rich River’s Peter Nesbitt struggled to keep pace with Bendigo East’s Lee Schraner in the Champion of Champions, beaten by 14 shots, while Trevor Nagorcka also suffered at the hands of Schraner, beaten 15-25 in the men’s state singles.
