But the club has found itself the toast of NSW cricket anyway.
The Magpies have been named the 2020/21 Club of the Year at the Cricket Australia Community Cricket Awards.
Cricket NSW club officer Angus Norton said the club's response to COVID-19 had been the key reason why the club was given the award.
“There were a couple of points they did really well this season,” he said.
“Firstly their growth, they grew by close to 50 per cent despite the impact of COVID-19. On top of that they got a season under way, and had contingency plans in place for what would happen if the borders were shut.
“On top of that they put themselves on the line to host a lot of events — especially in girls cricket — to make sure games got played.
“They showed an incredible commitment to keeping cricketers on the park, and that's a huge credit to Kirk and the team.
“They were incredibly deserving winners of the award.”
Moama Cricket Club president Kirk Teasdale said it was a huge honour.
“It's fantastic to have the work of our club acknowledged,” he said.
“At the end of the day we all just love the game of cricket, and we want to see as many people get the opportunity to play the game as possible, so we did what we were able to do to make sure that happened.
“The utmost credit belongs to Marcus Maher and Kate Burns, they both spent so much time on the COVID planning and making sure the sport was safe for everyone at the club to play.
“It meant a great deal to us that we could just play this season. The award is a great acknowledgment for the work but at the end of the day, it was just a proud moment to get to play.”
