After a public campaign and calls from elected officials, Campaspe Shire has secured funding for a supervised crossing at Twin Rivers.
The school has been advocating for a crossing for about two years after one student was hit by a vehicle and countless brake-screeching near misses.
Echuca Twin Rivers School principal Julie Hommelhoff has welcomed the news for the school community.
“It’s a fantastic result,” Ms Hommelhoff said.
“As the populations and the area grows, it will be really supportive for the students who need it, and our parents will be ecstatic.”
Ms Hommelhoff has credited the hard work of the school community for the result.
“You would think a school just came with a crossing, but it doesn’t,” she said.
Campaspe Shire Mayor Chrissy Weller said the funding had been provided through the Department of Transport.
“We are pleased to have received confirmation that the supervised school crossing site for Wilkinson Drive will be constructed near Lavender Street,” Cr Weller said.
“Both the infrastructure and the supervisor have been funded, so we hope to instate the crossing as soon as schedules will allow.”
Cr Weller said that the application for the crossing’s funding was lodged in February, after tracking a more accurate number of cars when the school was back at fully capacity.
“The crossing will be a fantastic asset for the families of these schools, and we are proud to support them,” she said.
