The committee’s role is to oversee the local sports hall of fame, recommend inductees to the council and celebrate local athletes’ achievements through an official induction ceremony.
Nominations to be a part of the committee are currently open and will close on February 29 at 5pm.
The committee is comprised of up to four council representatives, one Valley Sport representative and up to eight community members.
One of the council representatives and GSSHFAC chair, Anthony Brophy, is proud of how the committee helps celebrate local sporting achievements.
“Greater Shepparton is well known for having a strong sporting identity, be it locally, at a state, national or even at an international level, and this committee helps ensure these local achievements are recognised,” he said.
“We are looking forward to seeing some new faces nominate for the committee. We have been fortunate to have some very successful and knowledgeable sporting personalities on the committee in the past.”
Previous inductees include former AFL player and now coach of the Richmond Football Club Adem Yze, former Hockeyroos star Louise Dobson OAM and cyclist Brett Lancaster OAM, who won gold for Australia at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
Mayor Shane Sali has encouraged locals with a strong interest in sport within the region to nominate themselves for the committee so that they can play a part in honouring the achievements of local sporting icons.
“The aim of the sports hall of fame is to recognise and celebrate our local sporting history, as well as individuals and teams who have achieved sporting excellence and made a significant contribution to their chosen sport,” he said.
The next Greater Shepparton Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony is due to occur in 2025.
Nomination forms and further information are available on the council’s website at www.greatershepparton.com.au or by phoning (03) 5832 9700.
