Entering the Melbourne Pavilion ring opposite Doncaster’s Daniel Chen, Matthews, 19, and his opponent fought first on the card of the Warriors Way virtual event.
The Echuca-trained fighter went toe-to-toe with Chen in three two-minute rounds, with an even opening two rounds setting the scene for a fast-and-furious final round.
But caught a couple times in the final round, Matthews failed to land the blows needed to score, going down 30-28, 29-28, 29-28.
In his debut fight, Chen said he had been nervous to face Matthews as he was a “walk forward type of fighter”.
Matthews played the aggressor for much of the opening two rounds, though was caught out on a takedown in the first and third rounds by Chen.
