Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was the hero as Argentina beat Ecuador 4-2 on penalties to move into the semi-finals of the Copa America.

Martinez stopped two spot-kicks for the reigning champions in the shootout after the teams fought out a 1-1 draw in Thursday's last-eight clash.

In the shootout, Messi clipped the crossbar with Argentina's opening effort, but Martinez saved Ecuador's first two spot-kicks before Nicolas Otamendi scored the decisive penalty to book a semi-final spot.
Argentina will face either Venezuela or Canada, who play on Friday (Saturday AEST), in the semi-final.
