Water police fine dangerous boaters

FORTY-FOUR vessels were checked and 16 fines issued during a three-day water police operation around the Echuca and Cohuna district last week.

The operation from January 3-5 saw officers take to several waterways, including Gunbower Creek Cohuna, Greens Lake, Waranga Basin, Lake Boga and Lake Charm.

Police were pleased to find no hoon offending.

However, the fines were issued in relation to marine safety equipment, licences and registration.

They included failure to wear personal flotation devices, unlicensed driving, unregistered vessels and lack of required waterproof buoyant torches.

Police are encouraging everyone to be safe on the waterways this summer.

“We will continue to use boats, jet-skis, drones and other techniques to ensure that everyone is staying safe on the water,” the police said.

“You may not always be able to see us, but we will be keeping a close eye on dangerous behaviour.”
