The school, which opened its doors in 1956, has seen declining enrolment numbers “over many years,” which has made its operation increasingly difficult, CESL executive director Kate Fogarty said.
“Low demographic growth projections for the region have further undermined the viability of the school, and we believe that, as difficult as it is, this is the best decision for the Pyramid Hill community,” she said.
There were 14 people attending a Catholic primary school in Pyramid Hill in 2021, according to data from ABS, with St Patrick’s being the only non-secular option in the town.
When the school’s closure was announced on Wednesday, August 7, there were 12 students enrolled.
Ms Fogarty said CESL staff members have supported families in transitioning to their preferred school for 2025, and have made career options, including alternative employment at the organisation, clear to staff members.
“I recognise principal John O’Connor and the staff who have been exceptional teachers and leaders for the children, and the St Patrick’s community more broadly,” she said.
Pyramid Hill College, a Foundation to Year 10 facility, is the only other school in the town, but a daily bus service to St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Cohuna is also available to local families.
Ms Fogarty said the school would be honoured and celebrated later this year, with Jenni Kennedy, CESL’s communications manager, confirming Sunday, December 8, has been saved for commemorations.
