When April Tuddenham, 21, decided to trim her long hair, she wanted to do it for a good cause.
After a bit of research, she found Tangled Up Hair Salon in Wangaratta.
It had a two-fold approach to using unwanted hair to benefit others.
The salon can send hair to be made into a wig for someone who is living with cancer, and any leftover can actually be used to soak up oil that has been spilt on a road or in the ocean.
April’s mum Janelle said they booked an appointment and were extremely pleased with the results.
“They washed April’s hair, dried it, straightened it, and then cut it into two piggy tails,” Janelle said.
“They collected the hair and sent it off to be made into wigs for people with cancer.”
And the rest is being put to good environmental purposes.
“We were just amazed to find out that all the hair off the floor can be used for oil spills in the oceans and also truck accidents,” Janelle said.
“They put that down to on the road, and it soaks up all the oil. So they bag up all the hair on the floor and donate it.”
