A draft design has been prepared for the installation of raised pedestrian crossings, or ‘wombat’ crossings, on both legs of Hare St at the intersection with Heygarth St.
The southern leg of Hare St will also be converted to be left out only, meaning vehicles will only be able to turn left instead of having the option to cross the intersection.
Department of Planning executive director of Loddon Mallee and Hume Anthony Judd said the works will help to protect the community.
“The upgrades at the Hare and Heygarth Sts intersection will improve safety at this location, making the area safer for everyone — particularly those travelling on foot and cycling.
“We’ll work with Campaspe Shire Council on designs to ensure the safest outcome possible for the community,” he said.
Once the design has been approved, construction is expected to begin early next year.
The Hare and Heygarth Sts intersection received funding this year under the Federal Black Spot program 2024-25 round.
When funding was announced, Federal Member for Bendigo and Chair of the Victorian Black Spot Consulting Panel Lisa Chesters said the intersection was selected as “vehicles were having difficulty selecting a safe gap to cross or turn”.
A total of $435,000 was allocated to the intersection from a federal pool of $150 million per year, according to Roads Australia, with $33 million distributed in Victoria.
