The local appeal will focus on raising funds for the development on the vacant block next to the Salvation Army building.
“We’re looking at building a welfare community hub with a small supermarket, and the money we raise will be put into that,” Auxiliary Lieutenant Sonia Edwards said.
“We’ve had the house next door to the hall demolished, so it’s starting.”
The local target for the appeal is $8000, with collection points at Coles, Aldi, Big W and Beechworth Bakery, as well as the pedestrian crossing in Hare St near Amcal Pharmacy.
“We were really down last year, we only raised $4500; one year we raised $14,000, but it’s roughly around $10,000 to $11,000,” Aux Lt Edwards said.
“We’ve got a launch on Saturday (May 7) at the hall with a garage sale, with bacon and egg rolls and orange juice for people to purchase on the day; we’ve got the trivia night happening on May 20, and all tables have been allocated, 13 tables of 10; and the Thrift Shop will be having a fashion parade on May 26 at 5pm at the shop.
“There is a $10 entry fee, and people can buy what’s been modelled, as well as prizes and other items for sale.
“We just need an MC for that event.”
Aux Lt Edwards said the Salvation Army was grateful to the Echuca-Moama community, which had rallied together for the Red Shield Appeal year after year.
“This year is no different – we need the help of community members more than ever as we continue to support those who have felt the devastating impacts of the past couple years,” she said.
“Last year, through Echuca-Moama’s generous support during the Red Shield Appeal, we were able to purchase swags for the homeless, non-perishable food for those struggling to put food on the table and back-to-school assistance.”
The Salvos are in need of 20,000 volunteers across the country and 120 to collect in the Echuca-Moama community. To get involved, contact Aux Lt Edwards on 0427 666 155 or Sonya Bonazza at the Thrift Shop on 03 5480 1298.
