Fire trailer farmer insurance
Hold tight - we’re checking permissions before loading more content
Cooma and district farmers can rest a little easier this year after Cooma Country Fire Authority bought a new fire trailer.
The $7000, 1200-litre trailer will be a readily available and quick access firefighting tool Cooma CFA captain Greg Sherman hopes farmers will use.
“This is more of a fire preventing appliance than a firefighting appliance,” Mr Sherman said.
“We purchased it so farmers could have ready access to a tool to help make planned and permit burn-offs that little bit safer. It will also help in our struggle at the CFA to prevent fires before they begin or before they get out of hand.”
And while it will not go out with members in quick emergency fires, it will be ready at a moment’s notice.

Permission granted to upgrade cemetery
Campaspe Shire has issued a planning permit for the Whroo Cemetery Trust to carry out significant upgrades to the historic site.
Trust chairman Bob Holschier said trust members were delighted to receive the permit, as the cemetery had been neglected for many years.
He said it allowed for the trust to move forward with projects without having to continually refer them to council for approval.
“It has been a frustrating two years since the trust was appointed by the Minster for Health,” Mr Holschier said.
“However, following a Family Day in June last year … we were more determined than ever to achieve our goal of upgrading the cemetery, whilst maintaining its historic and heritage character.”

Bombers have too much forward firepower
Kyabram’s positive start to the new Goulburn Valley Football League season continued in Saturday’s second round with a comfortable away win against Echuca.
Kyabram led from start to finish after its smallest player, Ryan Emmett, kick-started the effort with the first of his four goals only a minute or so into the game.
Whether Kyabram eased in the last quarter when owning a 60-point lead at three-quarter time or Echuca lifted – probably a bit of both – the visitors had a comfortable 50-point buffer at the final siren.
The only major difference between the teams was Kyabram had the player to do the finishing off work in front of goals. Echuca had none.
Apart from Emmett’s four goals, coach Justin Sherman and Billy Burtin each chipped in with three, while Rhys Clark, Jordan Williams and Nick Coulstock also added scoreboard pressure.

$55,000 Kamikaze Ball profit distributed; Ky Hospital gets $20,000
Profit from the recent 10th annual Kyabram Kamikaze Ball was distributed to various community groups last week, with the Kyabram Hospital the major benefactor.
The hard-working Kamikaze Ball committee had a $55,000 profit to hand out to needy groups and those who had helped with the staging of the two-day event on March 19 and 20 at Kyabram Showgrounds.
The Kyabram Hospital was presented with a cheque for $20,000 to go towards the planned renovations to the hospital.
“We appreciate the efforts of the Kamikaze committee members, and they are a credit to themselves and the community,” hospital treasurer Peter Hann said on behalf of the hospital board at the cheque hand over.
Chief executive Alwin Gallina said the money would go toward the building appeal which will commence in autumn of 1996.

Factory’s future looks safe
The immediate future of the Kyabram branch of John Brown Industries looks assured … for the time being, anyway.
Talk of closing the factory has ceased as its 30 workers continue their 100 per cent efficiency output.
“We are working overtime two nights a week and Friday afternoons as well,” the branch forelady Joan Allen said yesterday morning, adding “There is no way the branch will be closed down at the moment’’.
Mrs Allen said the factory was supplying 7000 garments a week to meet demands for the approaching winter.
“With overtime and Friday afternoons we are working six days a week. We are working at 100 per cent efficiency and there is just no way the branch can be closed.”

Council’s support commission
Several district municipalities have given their support to the Water Commission approach for funds to establish a Sub-regional Drainage Area.
Those supporting the move are the Town of Kyabram and the Shires of Deakin, Rodney and Waranga.
The Water Commission has applied to both the state and Commonwealth governments for capital funds for the establishment of a Sub Regional Area covering the four municipalities.
The council have also requested the Commission to provide them with copies of its overall plan.

There’s a long way to go yet Bombers
“Kyabram a top premiership hope? You have to be joking!”
That was one of the first comments I was greeted with after the Kyabram-Stanhope match on Saturday.
And quite frankly I had to agree with the Stanhope gentleman who made the comment.
And anyone else who saw the Bombers labour to their 27-point – 12.17 to 8.14 – win against their near neighbours would nearly have to agree.
It certainly was an uninspiring win in an uninspiring match.
Kyabram always had the game in hand, but were never able to take over completely and battled for every goal they got.
Well nearly every one anyway.
