The petition, signed by more than 300 residents, requested council advocate on residents’ behalf to the NSW Government to help fund the development.
It specifically asks for the Mathoura Police Station to be refurbished, opened and manned.
Mayor John Harvie said the petition showed how important this issue was to the community.
“Our residents have made it clear that they want to feel safe and supported, and permanent policing infrastructure plays a vital role in that,” he said.
“Council is proud to stand behind this petition and to help amplify the community’s voice in calling for the resources they deserve.
“Whether you’re a resident, business owner, or just someone who cares about the future of Mathoura, we invite you to join the call for action.”
In addition to promoting the petition, council will write to the NSW police minister, local members of parliament and the NSW Police Force to advocate for increased policing infrastructure and resourcing in Mathoura.
The calls for an operational police station come after a notable rise in crime around Mathoura.
Cr Kylie Berryman, who has been pushing for the station’s upgrade, said the rise in crime was linked to the lack of a manned station in Mathoura.
“I was very happy to support this for our residents in Mathoura,” she said.
“Since not having a manned police station, crime has dramatically increased and repeated offences on some peoples properties.
“I think it’s very very important that we do push this very hard to get a new police station.”
The petition is available to sign in-person at the council’s customer service offices or at various businesses around Mathoura.
People can also download the petition online at the council’s website and return it to the offices.
Council will continue to provide updates on advocacy efforts and encourage ongoing community engagement on this important issue.
