Paul Vascotto said Dodgy, an elderly Patterdale terrier-cross, joined a few of his owners at their annual Southern 80 camping trip last month.
As usual, he was left off-leash to have walk freely around the campsite near Youngs Rd, Torrumbarry, but did not come back.
“We bring him up every year, he’s like our guard dog,” Mr Vascotto said.
“We think he may have wandered into another campsite, and they’ve thought he was a stray.”
Mr Vascotto said so far Dodgy had not been handed into local animal shelters, and he does not have a tag, or microchip.
He said a woman had posted on Facebook saying she had found him, but by the time the friends saw the post, she had released him at the vineyard estate on Baillieu Rd.
“We’ve been up looking for him on our trail bikes recently,” Mr Vascotto said.
“There’s a lot of us that love him.”
There are four to five people that share ownership of Dodgy in Melbourne’s inner suburbs.
Mr Vascotto said he looked similar to the dog from the film Red Dog.
“He just started getting passed around, he’s everyone’s dog,” he said.
Dodgy is a 17-year-old Patterdale terrier-cross. He’s medium-sized and black in colour.
