Commissioned by Stan, Black Snow is set in a small tropical town gripped by a murder mystery.
Mr Fimmel plays Detective James Cormack, who follows the cold case murder of Isabel Baker when the opening of a time capsule unearths a secret.
He headlines a cast that features a number of renowned Australian acting talents, including Brooke Satchwell (Neighbours, Mr Inbetween), Erik Thomson (Packed to the Rafters), Rob Carlton (Total Control) and Kym Gyngell (The Comedy Company, Wakefield).
Newcomers Talijah Blackman-Corowa, Jemmason Power and Molly Fatnowna also feature.
The series, produced by Goalpost Television, was created by Lucas Taylor (Harrow), writing alongside Boyd Quakawoot (Black Comedy) and Beatrix Christian (Jindabyne).
“Featuring a phenomenal cast led by Travis Fimmel, Black Snow promises to be a landmark addition to our growing slate of homegrown Stan Originals,” Stan chief content officer Cailah Scobie said.
“Our thanks to the extraordinary team at Goalpost Television and our partners at Screen Australia, Screen Queensland and Screen NSW, alongside the Australian South Sea Islander community of North Queensland, without whom this outstanding series would not be possible.”
Sundance Now vice-president of programming Shannon Cooper said the addition of Mr Fimmel was a key moment for the production.
“Travis was meant to play Detective Cormack and lead this exceptionally strong cast as they help tell this gripping story,” Ms Cooper said.
“We’re excited to work alongside our long-time partners at Stan as well as Goalpost Television and All3Media International as filming gets under way, and we’re thankful for everyone’s diligence in cultivating a trusting and fruitful relationship with the local communities, as their support is invaluable.”
Mr Fimmel, who turns 43 on Friday, earned acclaim for his role as Ragnar Lothbrok in the television series Vikings from 2013 to 2017.
He currently stars in the science fiction series Raised by Wolves.
