Local Lions lend a helping hand to Goulburn Valley flood victims

The Shepparton Lions Club, with the assistance of the Lions Clubs International Foundation, recently handed over a $2000 cheque to FamilyCare Shepparton.

Shepparton Lions Club president Patsy Lansdown said the money was donated to FamilyCare to assist victims of the recent floods.

Ms Lansdown said FamilyCare had a “register” containing the names of many families who suffered due to the flood, making it easier for them to contact those in need.

The club also donated approximately 450 books supplied by 123Read2Me, an organisation that provides children in low socio-economic communities with free books.

Ms Lansdown said she hoped the books would provide “something nice” for people who had lost their homes and property.

Included in the amount was $1500 from Lions Clubs International Foundation for emergency relief, such as food, blankets and water for approximately 120 families.

The $500 contributed by the Shepparton Lions Club was mainly for replacing essential items such as cooking equipment, crockery and cutlery lost when floodwater washed through homes.

The Lions Club continues to make ongoing contributions to various organisations in Shepparton.

Recently the club received equipment donations, including high-pressure washers, hoses, brooms and power leads from Lions members and Bunnings, which also provided boxes of Lego for children.

“Working together as a team and collecting all these cleaning items from Bunnings in Mill Park and driving up to Shepparton to drop them off is certainly one of the great efforts of Lions,” Ms Lansdown said.
