The woman attended the Yarrawonga Police Station for a breath test where she provided a positive reading of 0.174. A notice of immediate driving ban was issued, and she will be summoned to appear at Cobram Magistrates Court at a later date.
A 55-year-old Yarrawonga man was intercepted in Belmore Street at around 6.15pm on Sunday, October 2. The driver produced a positive breath test and was conveyed to the Yarrawonga Police Station where he produced a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.071. The male was issued with an infringement notice for $555.00 and his driver’s license will be suspended for six months.
Yarrawonga Police Sergeant Bree George said it is very disappointing that drivers are continuing to drink and drive.
“It’s especially disappointing to see that over eighty per cent of our drink drivers intercepted are Yarrawonga Mulwala residents,” Sgt George said.
“Statistics show that in the last 16 months, Yarrawonga have had the highest percentage of drink drivers intercepted not only in the Moira Shire but also in the Wangaratta and Alpine Shire’s and associated PSAs (Police Service Areas).
“With the warm weather approaching this is a real safety concern for not only police, but other road users.”
Sgt George urges drivers to please do the right thing, and if in doubt don’t drive.
Collision at pedestrian crossing
An 83-year-old Cobram woman suffered minor injuries at a pedestrian crossing on Belmore Street on Tuesday, September 27.
A 71-year-old Bundalong female driver was stopped in Belmore Street near the Piper Street intersection waiting for a vehicle to reverse out of a parking space. The driver was stopped just short of the pedestrian crossing and as she proceeded to accelerate forward the woman walked in front of her vehicle on the pedestrian crossing in an attempt to cross the road.
The driver failed to see and give way to the pedestrian and as a result the elderly female fell hard onto the road. Concerned bystanders rendered assistance and police and ambulance attended and conveyed the pedestrian to Wangaratta Base Hospital for assessment.
The woman received bruising and soreness and was released from hospital later that day. The Bundalong driver was issued with an infringement notice for failing to give way to a pedestrian at a pedestrian crossing.
Yarrawonga Police Sergeant Bree George said this is a timely reminder to all drivers that when travelling towards a pedestrian crossing, you must drive at a speed so that you can stop safely.
“At a pedestrian crossing you must give way to any pedestrian on or about to step on the crossing. Failing to do this may result in a penalty notice of $324 and the loss of three demerit point,” Sgt George said.
“Yarrawonga Police will be conducting regular foot patrols of Belmore Street and around pedestrian crossings to ensure drivers and pedestrians are complying with road rules.”
