“Due to our current flood crisis in our local areas Echuca Stadium has become a relief centre,” the Echuca Moama Basketball Association (EMBA) said.
“All basketball has been cancelled until further notice.”
EMBA president Lisa Baker said when she got the call about needing the stadium, the association was more than willing to help.
“It was a no-brainier. It was all about doing whatever we can to help,” Baker said.
“The shire reached out to us saying that the stadium would be closed from 8am Friday to midnight Tuesday due to the evacuation for Rochester.
“We then got a call saying that they need it earlier, so Thursday night’s domestic games were cancelled as well.
“When the shire rang and said they would need the stadium earlier, we said ‘not a problem’.”
The Pirates were set to hold their home openers this weekend, with their senior men’s and women’s teams scheduled to take on Macedon Ranges on Saturday night.
The status of those games is now in doubt, but they will not be played at Echuca Stadium. The games could be postponed, relocated to a different stadium or abandoned altogether.
“We will play things by ear at this stage,” Baker said.
“We are still working out what will happen with the CBL games on Saturday night. They could be rescheduled, abandoned or relocated this weekend.
“They [Basketball Victoria] are reaching out to other associations to see if there is a court available, but then it comes down to whether or not our players can get there because of all the flooding.“
EMBA’s domestic competitions have also been suspended.
