On Saturday, the league's 2021 season will finally begin, as the Moama Football and Netball Club officially christens its new facilities against the Deniliquin Rams.
It will be the first match for premiership points in the MFL since September 21, 2019 - an off-season of 551 days.
After the coronavirus pandemic cancelled all football and netball throughout the region in 2020, Moama president Matt Lake said it was a relief for the season to finally arrive.
“It's a very exciting time,” he said.
“There is a lot happening around the club each night, getting the final details ready, making sure we are ready to go and to host Deni this weekend.
“The players are champing at the bit, the committee is in overdrive and we are really excited for the community to be able to get through the gates and watch some local football and netball again.”
Round one of the MFL doesn't actually kick off for another week - the Easter weekend.
However, Moama and Deniliquin agreed to move its round eight fixture on May 29 to this weekend.
Lake said it had been a huge effort by both clubs to get the season underway early.
“Deniliquin have been fantastic,” he said.
“We are so grateful to them for all the effort they have put in to help us get this up and going, and for agreeing to move the game. It's a huge credit to them as a club.”
On the football field, coach Luke Eldridge said his players were more than ready to go.
“It's been a long time off,” he said.
“Most of our guys haven't played in well over a year, they're just excited to get back out there.
“What's surprised me is despite being such a long wait to get back, this week has flown by for us. Now we're ready to get out there and get the season under way.”
A grade netball coach Jodie Lake said her team was also ready to go.
“Excited really is the only word I can use,” she said.
“It's been a long time off, and we also know it's going to be a really long season, but as a group we are just happy to be back out there and playing.”
Lake said she was expecting a strong contest for the return to the court.
“I think Deni will be a really good side,” she said.
“So for our group it's about playing our best netball and seeing how we match up and what we can do on the court to get the win.”
