In the 12 months to March this year, there were 731 family incidents reported to police in the Campaspe region, and the region’s rate of 1944 incidents per 100,000 people is significantly higher than that of 1389 across the state.
At a launch event in Moama on Thursday, June 24, the CFVAG released its priorities and actions for the next year.
CFVAG chairwoman Yvette Jaczina said the group recognised a need to work with the community to encourage greater understanding of gender equality and create meaningful ways that assisted others to challenge attitudes and behaviours contributing to gender inequality.
“We know family and domestic violence is both a cause and consequence of gender inequality,” she said.
“Our strategic priorities for the next year recognise the need to work alongside victim-survivors and bring others into the conversation, to help us prevent family violence before it starts.”
The group wants to see the Campaspe region promote equal and respectful relationships, understand the gendered dynamics of family violence and value women’s participation in public and private life.
To do this, the group plans to promote an understanding of gender equaliy, align with state-based peak bodies including 16 Days of Activism, GenVic and OurWatch, and support at least one event each year to connect with the community.
It will also prioritise facilitating a service system with the capacity and understanding to respond appropriately to all family violence victims, including through supporting the development of perpetrator programs and a lived experience workshop.
