The artform was prominent among the Egyptians who painted the tombs of their Pharaohs and even that far back people across the Mediterranean and northern Europe got to marvel at crude, but equally historic, cave paintings.
We, of course, look back on them all with fascination and admiration.
Then there are those of us who may not create era-defining images, but would love to have the chance to pit their palettes against the diverse historical displays at Echuca Historical Society (EHS).
And that’s exactly what EHS is offering any artist – from a wannabe to a wizard – who might like to paint some scenes they are unlikely to see anywhere else.
EHS president Dot Hammond said the paint for a day at the museum – a free event with plenty of plein air potential – would be held on Saturday, April 17 from 10am to 4pm.
Dot said budding artists would be working with direct one-on-one input from established local artist Glenda Cornell.
Glenda has embraced local history better than most. Her gallery is set up within the confines of the Port of Echuca historical precinct.
“We do expect artists of every standard and hopefully the more experienced will get involved with beginners around them at the same time,” Dot said.
“We will have a small supply of paints and other materials available for all.
“If you are an experienced painter wanting to come and do something different with us, it would be a big help if you could bring you own equipment,” she said.
“For the beginners, and the barely begun, don’t be shy. Just let us know when you book.”
When Dot says book, she cannot emphasise enough the COVID limitation on the program.
EHS can only cater for 10 painters.
She said because of that the event would be held outdoors at the front and in the rear of the museum.
“If you do book (and bookings are essential), please note some of the locations are in shade but others are not; so hats, sunscreen and cool gear will be a must,” Dot added.
Bookings close on April 9 so please get in early and email your details to eh.soc@bigpond.com
“Once your place is confirmed we will email further details to you so you can join us and paint in this heritage setting,” Dot said.
“General museum visitors on the day will also be able to wander around and watch the artists at work.
“We are also considering the possibility of a group exhibition later in the year but first we will get this day organised and see how we go.”
Details are available from Echuca Historical Society between 10am and 2pm, seven days a week, on 5480 1325 or after hours on 0408 505 662.
