Shepparton’s past to be unveiled at History Hub grand opening this Saturday

The history of Shepparton is about to become even more accessible and celebrated, with the unveiling of the Shepparton History Hub on Saturday.

Located at the Scout Hall adjacent to the Shepparton Heritage Centre, 156 Welsford Street, the event, which starts at 2pm, promises an immersive journey into the past — and everyone is invited.

For those who cherish the city’s history and those who’ve long been curious, the hub is set to be a captivating site.

Shepparton Heritage Centre treasurer Kristy Rudd said the venue would house the extensive Shepparton News archives, which stretch back to 1882.

“We’re opening up a community-based History Hub where the public can come in and do research,” Mrs Rudd said.

Not only will attendees have the chance to delve into newspaper archives, but the event will also shine a light on the Scouting movement in Shepparton.

Visitors can also expect a rich tapestry of history, including a glimpse into the G. J. Coles warehouse with its wooden shelving from Fryers St, dating back to 1938. These shelves now hold the News archives.

Art enthusiasts have a treat awaiting them, as there will be an art exhibit.

“We’re also highlighting and doing an art exhibition of the Mollie Hill artwork,” Mrs Rudd said.

Shepparton Heritage Centre president Geoff Maynard will be the master of ceremonies. Alongside him, McPherson Media Group executive chairman Ross McPherson will speak on behalf of the News and the McPherson family, and Shepparton Heritage Centre committee member John Dainton will do a presentation on ‘what’s buried under Monash Park’, taking a deep dive into Shepparton’s early history along the Goulburn River.
