On Friday, February 12, students from Echuca College, Moama Anglican Grammar, Echuca Twin Rivers Specialist School, River City Christian College and St Joseph's College gathered at Bendigo TAFE Echuca for an introductory session and lunch.
Beacon Foundation project manager Jane Reid said it was a good chance for the students to connect and get a taste of what they are in for this year.
“We wanted to have this get together because it gives them the opportunity to meet their peers and start working together as soon as possible,” she said.
“We've shown them what the foundation is all about, what they will be doing as leaders and really learn about themselves as well.”
Echuca College Beacon leader Lily Dalziel said she was keen to take on the role.
“I've always wanted to help in the community and I thought this would be a great opportunity to do that,” she said.
St Joseph's College leader Arielle Dolan said it was also a way for her to learn valuable skills she could use later in life.
“It's a good chance to work on public speaking skills, I know that's something I will need so it's good to start now,” she said.
“We also get to work with the other schools to organise different events and be leaders for younger students.”
Ms Reid said she was confident in this year's group.
“They did a great job with all the team building exercises and communications activities,” she said.
“They've already formed friendships, which is fantastic to see.”
