At the meeting on February 23, plans of a development application for a new subdivision called Arthurs Estate were revealed and included a place for the new school.
Murray River Council Mayor Chris Bilkey said while it was still early days, there were some details around the addition to the Boyes St area.
“The Catholic Diocese of Wilcannia-Forbes purchased the land a few years ago and have been working to get plans to us for the new school,” Cr Bilkey said.
“It is my understanding that they want to build a primary and secondary school on the lot on Lignum and Kiely roads, but we are hoping the plans will come through in the coming weeks.”
Cr Bilkey said adding this school to the area, which already houses Moama Anglican Grammar School and the soon-to-be built Moama and District Preschool, would make this a "great education precinct".
“We've always been passionate about helping provide the best facilities for our younger generations,” he said.
“This new school will be a great addition to the area.”
The estate itself will have more than 260 blocks up for purchase, with Mr Bilkey saying it was essential in order for the already growing population to continue on an upward trend.
“It's a reflection of the growing demand for residential opportunities in Moama and it consolidates the expansion of the town into that northern and western part of our township,” he said.
“I don't think there's any doubt about the continued strong growth that was already growing strongly prior to COVID-19.
“Since then, that increase in demand has accelerated and I don't see that simply snapping back to what it was before.”
He said there would be something for everyone, with plans including a range of block sizes.
“Importantly, it includes a variety of housing opportunities with a number of larger and medium density blocks, creating a nice mix in the estate.
“Council found the application fulfilled all the objectives we have for further residential sites.”
Mr Bilkey said he expected the blocks to sell out quickly.
“We had 365 blocks on Twenty Four Ln near Rich River Golf Club open up during the COVID-19 period, and they had sold out before they'd even been completed and we expect the same to happen with Arthurs Estate,” he said.
“There's an increasing appreciation and desire to move out of the cities and into areas like our own.”
