Ben joined the 1st Echuca Joey Scout Mob in mid 2017 and has since attended multiple scouting adventures, Hop into Science Day at Scienceworks, Hop to the Zoo, a sleepover with his own mob and Kangaree, a one-night adventure with more than 1000 joey scouts from across the state.
Joey Scout leader Narelle Currey said the aim of the promise challenge is to allow older Joey Scouts to gain a greater understanding of the scout promise and law, to learn about scouting’s founder, Lord Robert Baden-Powell, and to discover the history of scouting.
The challenge requires the Joey Scout to complete certain elements, such as research and discussion with their parents and leaders, away from the mob meetings.
The Joey will also be required to give a presentation to the mob on completion of the task.
Ben helped others in the community by delivering meals on wheels for several months.
Ben was presented with his award in front of his peers at St Mary’s Primary School, by his Joey Scout leader Narelle Currey.
Ben and his leader also presented the Victorian State Scarf to his classroom teacher for her support of his scouting adventures.
Ms Currey said Scarf Up for scouting is a visible way of developing community links, using youth members as the public face of scouting.
It all started at Big Day Scout in 2015, when chief scout of Victoria Shane Jacobson was invested with the state scarf.
The scarf is adorned with images that represent Victoria and scouting — the Southern Cross, Fleur de Lis (the scout logo), icons of Victoria such as a tram and the state emblems; the pink heath, the Helmeted Honey Eater, the Leadbeater’s Possum, the Weedy Sea dragon, hiking, sailing, abseiling and the scout salute symbols.
This scarf also includes a word map of all the Scouting districts and regions of Victoria. The scarf is designed to only be presented to special individuals and groups.
The 1st Echuca Joey Scout Mob meets on Tuesdays at the Scout Hall at 4.30pm and welcomes any child from 5-8 years old.
