Accessing top class Angus sires from North American breeders at affordable prices is the bread and butter for Dysart Angus at Seymour.

Principal Chris Goddard said a high-priced performing bull had an added value of providing semen for sale once purchased by a breeder, but importing high quality semen from overseas to mix offspring with local lines was better suited for his breeding herd of about 70 head.
“That gives the smaller breeders like us the ability to provide top genetics to customers at a better price but still from elite sperm,” Chris said.
Originally an Albury boy, Chris said his inspiration for breeding Angus came from the need to get out of Melbourne after a successful career as a lawyer, a vocation he still practices.
“I have always wanted to farm, but it’s an expensive hobby,” he said.
Chris and his wife Krystyna have operated Dysart Angus for more than 20 years and will have 15 of 39 bulls on show on Saturday, January 27 from 9am.
Purchases can be made by private sale either on the day or afterwards.
“Only 15 bulls will get into the pen, so if visitors want to see the rest, they are welcome to walk down the hill and inspect them,” Chris said.
“We will also have maybe 10 or so females with calf at foot, a couple we have got from Witherswood (Taminick) and of the younger ones, Stoney Point Yankee Queen which we purchased from South Australia.”
Chris said some commercial breeders worried about birth weight when wanting to join new bulls to heifers, while for cows this was not an issue.
“If you want that curve-bending growth, then you want a higher birth weight bull with higher growth,” he said.
“We try not to get too extreme because in the US there are now numbers which are pushing that growth.
“Breeders don’t want to be pulling calves.
“We use local and overseas sires to get a mix, to provide bulls with a spread of birth weights and growths.”
Dysart Angus will be open for stock inspection from 9am on Saturday, January 27 at 45 Dysart Rd, Seymour.
