As part of the 11 projects in the Nicholls electorate, these sites will receive a share of more than $290 million in funding under round five of the Bridges Renewal Program and round seven of the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program.
Finlay Rd near Tongala, Corop-Wanalta Rd near Elmore, Watsons Bridge near Gunbower and Quirks Bridge in Echuca Village will all receive money for much-needed upgrades.
Federal Member for Nicholls Damian Drum said the timing couldn’t be better to see funding flow to deliver improved and safer bridges and freight roads in Nicholls.
“This vital funding will allow communities right across the country to fast-track their highest-priority infrastructure projects, providing a much-needed boost to local jobs and the economy,” Mr Drum said.
“Every single local job we support in Nicholls by investing in infrastructure projects means one less worry for another Australian and their family, reliable work on the books for local construction companies, and more cash flowing through local businesses and communities doing it tough.”
Finlay Rd is set to be renewed to ensure the high percentage of commercial vehicle using the stretch will be able to do so safely. This project is set to be completed by June 30, 2021.
The Corop-Wanalta Rd will also be upgraded, which is set to be done by December 20, 2021.
Various renewal works, including bridge barrier works allowing more vehicle capacity on Watsons Bridge, are scheduled to be completed by December 20, 2021.
Quirks Bridge has been considered a high risk to road users and will receive improvements to bridge and approach barriers by June 30, 2021.
Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said improving safety and the flow of traffic on these roads and bridges was paramount.
“By improving our road network this funding will also help keep people safe on our roads while making key freight routes more efficient, delivering long-term benefits to drivers, businesses and local communities,” he said.
“This includes our truckies, who form an essential part of the backbone of our national economy and have been working tirelessly during COVID-19 to keep shelves stocked, hospitals supplied and the economy moving.
“Now more than ever, the continued rollout of road infrastructure projects is important to support local jobs, underpin economic growth and ensure all Australians can reach their destinations sooner and safer.”
