Currency, including $20, $50 and $100 notes, that feature an Asian symbol on the left-hand side, have been handed in to Echuca police.
Senior Constable Scott Newton urged business owners and residents to keep an eye out for them.
“They look real except for the Asian symbol where the window usually is,” he said.
“It appears people using them are targeting places where young kids work or where staff members are not really concentrating.
“Obviously we would ask anyone who receives them to hand them into the police,” he said.
Liz Critcher posted a photo of the fake money on Facebook along with a warning after her friend's gift shop in Echuca was "ripped off" $200 on Thursday, January 7.
“I’ve posted this to make businesses and others aware so no-one else gets ripped off,” she said.
“I have never checked my notes when withdrawing money or receiving change but I will from now on.”
Anyone with information about the fake money can contact Echuca police on 5483 1500 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
