And that includes buying a pair of jocks.
At the Very Special Kids golf day lunch, Tony Shaw — the Collingwood champion and MC for the day — admitted he had accidently thrown some worn clothing into the wrong plastic bag, and now had his jocks on stage.
Ever the showman, Shaw said he would start the bidding at $20.
They would sell for $40 in the end, with the winner offering to pay $50 if Shaw would sign them.
It was just a sign of the spirit in the room as people dug deep to support a fantastic cause.
A group of golfers hit the fairways of Rich River on Sunday, February 7, to raise money for the charity, which supports families of sick children.
The game was followed by a lunch with a number of former AFL players, including AFL Legend Kevin Sheedy, with an auction and multiple other activities to raise money for the organisation.
Very Special Kids chief executive Michael Wasley said these events were essential for the organisation.
“We are only able to do the work we do through the support of the community,” he said.
“To have the Echuca-Moama community come out and support us like this was fantastic. We have 12 or 13 families in this area we support, so it's incredible to see local families being supported by their own.
“Our role is about supporting families so that they can spend as much time together as possible. Unfortunately many of our families lose the child, so our role goes well beyond that, often for years in supporting them through the bereavement period.
“There are so many challenges in our lives, but then to have a child who has high care needs is incredibly demanding, so we do everything we can to support them through that, and having communities like Echuca-Moama come out and support us means so much.”
Shaw said it was a perfect reason to come back to Echuca-Moama.
“It's a truly great cause,” he said.
“The job Very Special Kids do is fantastic, so I was really excited to come up and be a part of the day. Seeing people come out and support people is wonderful.
“I first came here on holidays with my wife 41 years ago. And people in the country come out for events like this, they dig deep and support one another, and that's something really special.”
