The road, which runs between Ham Rd and Thyra Rd, was previously un-named and an adjoining landowner had requested for its closure.
Moama resident Richard Ham wrote to councillors before their February meeting, suggesting the name Altcar School Rd to recognise the history of the area.
“Altcar was the name of the property where my great-grandfather first settled and they had a school there,” Mr Ham said.
“It came down through the family; the last Ham who went to the Altcar school was Ivo Ham, he was the last mayor of Moama when it was a municipality separate to the shire.
“Ivo’s daughter still lives along Ham Rd which adjoins this new Altcar School Rd.”
Altcar is an area in England near Liverpool, where Mr Ham suggested the name probably came from.
While the exact time period the school was operating is unknown, an old school flag bears the date 1917.
“It’s very pleasing to have some recognition of the history of the area and full marks to council for recognising that,” Mr Ham said.
