Old decommissioned Glanville Village buildings were knocked down to make way for the new, purpose-built facility.
“It’s an exciting time to see demolition with the old building coming down, it’s certainly a big step forward,” ERH chief executive Nick Bush said.
The hospital has put in a request for tender with five companies for the build, with an expected start date of July 1 and completion set for the end of 2022.
“Once they put their prices in and how they’ll do the work then we’ll select a builder,” Mr Bush said.
“We just need to clear the site and prepare for builders to start.”
ERH needs to raise $1.3 million to deliver the centre and its programs after the Victorian Government pitched in $6 million and NSW $1 million.
It will be a new, modern space for cancer and dialysis patients to receive treatment, moving from its current space in an outdated aged care facility.
Cancer and Wellness Centre fundraising co-ordinator Shari Butcher said it was fantastic to see demolition of the site well and truly under way.
With over $210,000 raised of its $1.3 million goal, the hospital is calling for more help.
“Whilst COVID-19 has seen many fundraising opportunities put on hold or cancelled, we are still very thankful to those who have so far donated to our Cancer and Wellness Centre,” she said.
“We are confident we will reach this goal with the support of our wonderful community who understand the importance of having a purpose-built facility for our cancer and medical day treatment patients.
“We are asking our community to be creative, host an event, however big or small, and raise some funds to support this wonderful centre.”
