A new state-of the-art 3D mammography service is available for the first time in Echuca and reduces the need for additional invasive tests.
Breast imaging specialist Prue Neerhut said the new equipment provided patients with the lowest radiation dose possible and delivered more precise images.
“Our new service will help decrease ‘false positive’ findings and reduce problems which can occur in 2D mammography imaging,” Dr Neerhut said.
“Scans are completed in just seconds and the image quality is quite remarkable.
“It will help doctors to identify breast cancer with increased precision, ultimately improving outcomes for women.”
The 3D mammography technology, also known as breast tomosynthesis, allows expert radiologists to quickly and precisely image breast tissue in thin slices, typically 1mm thick.
During scanning, an X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast and takes a series of pictures at various angles, which are then reconstructed into a high-quality image.
ERH chief executive Nick Bush said the hospital was thrilled to have the latest in breast cancer detection technology available to women in the region.
“ERH are looking forward to working with our I-MED Radiology colleagues to see this advanced 3D technology be provided at our health service,” he said.
“Our long-held vision is to be a leader in the provision of care for our local community using the latest equipment and best practice evidence to guide the ongoing development of our care and services.”
I-MED Radiology regional manager Craig Platt said the radiology group was excited to partner with ERH and deliver an advanced breast mammography service to local patients.
“Our skilled radiologists, who specialise in the breast cancer field, are available on site to provide same-day reporting and ensure patients are at ease during their appointment,” he said.
