As the rental market in the twin towns seemingly dries up, the Salvos team has a range of ways it can lend a helping hand.
“We're here to give emergency relief to those who need it,” Echuca Salvation Army Auxiliary-Lieutenant Sonia Edwards said.
“While we can't help with housing like Anglicare can, we can offer swags, but we know that isn't always enough.”
When JobSeeker payments reduced in March, Ms Edwards said the Salvos prepared for the worst.
“We made sure we had enough supplies just in case we saw an increase in people using our services, but thankfully we really haven't seen a huge spike,” she said.
“I have seen an increase in people coming and mentioning they were in bad situations at home and it breaks my heart to hear people struggling with domestic violence.
“We just try to support anyone and everyone we can.”
The Salvation Army has a range of options to help people in need.
“We have fuel vouchers to help people who need help getting to and from medical appointments and Woolworths vouchers to help pay for groceries,” she said.
“I'm hoping we will also be able to eventually expand our Foodbank space, but we still have canned goods and other foods.
“In the future, I would like to get a purpose-built emergency relief centre here, but we won't be able to do that for a while yet, but it's something I'm working hard on.”
If you need assistance, you can visit the Salvation Army hall in Sturt St on Wednesdays between 10 am and 1 pm.
You will need to make an appointment before you attend by calling 5482 6722.
