$964 million road revamp kicks off in Goulburn Valley

A rutting road on the Goulburn Valley Hwy is being repaired, marking the start of a $964 million road maintenance blitz in Victoria.

Construction crews began works this week, targeting an 800m section of the highway’s northbound lanes at Wahring, with completion expected by mid-December, weather permitting.

The project involves removing the existing road surface and underlying layers and replacing them with upgraded materials to provide a smoother experience for over 3600 daily drivers who rely on this route.

To maintain safety throughout the construction period, temporary lane closures and reduced speed limits will be implemented.

Clear signage and traffic management crews will guide motorists through the affected areas.

The works are part of the Victorian Government’s broader strategy to improve vital travel and freight routes by mid-2025, with many major roads in the region, including the Hume Fwy and Great Alpine Rd, scheduled for upgrades.

“(We’re) rebuilding, repairing and resurfacing hundreds of major roads and highways right across the state,” Roads and Road Safety Minister Melissa Horne said.

“These major works across north-east Victoria will help deliver smoother, stronger, more efficient roads for the community.”

Drivers are advised to plan their trips and allow extra time when travelling through works.
