Waste transfer stations in Cohuna and Kerang have recently been approved as collection sites for Agsafe’s bagMUSTER program.
Council chief executive Geoff Rollinson said the agricultural sector relied on single-use bags for various products, which would normally end up in landfill ― until now.
“These single-use bags will be collected and turned into new product, which will reduce plastic waste and prevent harm to waterways, soil and ecosystems,” he said.
“We are proud to be one of the many municipalities across northern and western Victoria supporting this program, which has grown to 30 locations since its inception.”
Campaspe Shire Council currently operates drumMUSTER, a similar Agsafe program for chemical drums, and silage wrap recycling services at its Mt Scobie Transfer Station.
Single-use woven polypropylene, or PP, bags purchased from participating retailers after October 1 last year can be recycled through the bagMUSTER program.
Woven PP bags are commonly used for fertiliser, seed, grain, stock feed and pet food.
Gannawarra residents wanting to use the service must register their bags online at www.bagmuster.org.au and select a local transfer station.
