According to Anglicare, the award acknowledges individuals that have "demonstrated a positive attitude and commitment towards an element of their personal growth and dedication in actively pursuing progress towards this ultimate goal".
Ashley has been recognised for her work with Echuca's upcoming Headspace centre, and for her work in keeping her family unit together.
“Jess (from Anglicare) nominated me to help out with Headspace,” Ashley said.
“I had a meeting, and I have regular inputs with the colour of the building, and who they're going to hire and things like that."
After leaving school in year 9, Ashley has returned to complete her studies at TAFE, currently completing year 12 a year ahead of schedule.
“I just had trouble at school fitting in and that sort of thing, but I loved school my whole life,” she said.
“I left school for about a year, and then I enrolled in the TAFE.
“They put me in year 11, up a year higher, and now I'm doing year 12.”
While Ashley's win may have come as a surprise, Anglicare was pleased to acknowledge her efforts.
“Ashley’s commitment to improving her own life circumstances has been outstanding,” an Anglicare representative said.
“She shows resilience, compassion and empathy for others.
“Keeping her family together, at such a young age, is an inspiration.”
