Berrigan Shire Council has begun installing modular solar poles to power lighting, security cameras and wireless charging stations across the shire area, including Barooga.
The council partnered with PowerStack Energy for the project, which is aimed at improving facilities for the community.
The installation began on Monday, April 3 and a small ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Tuesday, April 4 at Barooga Adventure Park with Mayor Matthew Hannan in attendance.
More than 32 poles will be installed across sites including Barooga Adventure Park and the Botanical Gardens, as well as Finley Park and Railway Park.
Sites were chosen due to being common sites for vandals.
Cr Hannan said the project was part of council’s plan to ensure a safer community.
“This project is part of a staged approach to continue to work towards a safer community for Berrigan Shire. Key areas have been identified as priority due to their popularity and/or history of vandalism,” he said.
“This new way of being able to access this technology will be a huge benefit for our shire.”
PowerStack’s off-grid solar system uses vertical glassless solar cells and has been utilised across Australia for projects ranging from wildlife conservation lighting and the prevention of illegal dumping to wi-fi network deployment in smart city applications.
The installation of the equipment can be done in minutes by a two-person team with no need for cabling, trenching or utility approvals.
