On Friday and Saturday, the CVBD’s mid-week and pennant competitions returned for the first time since the dramatic end to last season.
Division one powerhouse Moama got its season off to the perfect start with a narrow five-shot victory.
Not one of the three rinks was decided by more than two shots.
Moama’s Apollo Birch said it was nice to finally get the season underway.
“I think everyone was a little bit rusty,” he joked.
“It was good to have the opportunity to play against people outside of our own club.”
Upon their return, players were faced with a different situation compared to previous seasons.
Under new COVID-19 restrictions, CVBD has elected to play the matches of 21 ends straight through.
“The break used to be able to work in your favour,” Birch said.
“It was often a good way of swinging momentum back in your way. But just across the three rinks, the games on Saturday were completely different.
“On one rink, our team managed to just hold on after almost giving up a big lead.
“And then on another, our guys produced a massive comeback.
“We’re really pleased with how we’ve started.”
In other division one matches, Tongala got the better of Rochester and Rich River were too good for Echuca.
Tongala, Rich River and Moama all made it two wins from two against the same opponents in division two.
Meanwhile in division three, Rich River came out on top against Elmore and Moama was far too strong for Echuca.
Both of Rochester’s teams – Red and Green - have fallen behind the eight ball early after they went down against Mathoura and Lockington respectively.
Mathoura, Moama, Rich River and Tongala were all victorious in division five.
Mid-week pennant
IT WAS mate against mate on Friday at City of Echuca as the club’s two mid-week pennant teams faced off.
Echuca White was far too strong for its sister side Echuca Blue as it ran out 47-shot winners.
Pat Schram, who was representing the White half of Echuca, said the match was much closer than the scoreboard suggested.
“It was a little strange playing against your clubmates,” she said.
“The first game back under the new COVID-19 rules meant there was a little adjustment period at the start of the day.
“We’re just glad to be back playing. It was great to see so many smiling faces out on the greens.”
Moama Red was able to start its season in resounding fashion with a monster 101-shot victory over Mathoura Blue.
Mathoura Red ensured the club broke even as it recorded a 47-shot win against Elmore.
Moama Green had a big win of its own as it defeated Ky Valley View by 54 shots.
Elsewhere, Rich River were far too good for Tongala.
