Boy has surgery in Melbourne after Shepparton CBD stabbing

Shepparton police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the stabbing of a 14-year-old boy in the CBD early on Thursday evening.

Police say the boy was stabbed in the stomach at about 6pm on Thursday, September 21 and was taken to GV Health in a serious but stable condition before being flown to Melbourne for surgery.

A 17-year-old male suspect was arrested and interviewed by police but later released pending further inquiries.

Police believe the two were known to each other.

“There was a large group of youth in the area and a lot of fighting, and it’s been an ongoing problem over the last few days, so we’re going to step up patrols in the Maude St area from now on,” acting sergeant Nathan Trimby of Shepparton police said.

“Any witnesses, who we haven’t already spoken to, if they could come forward and contact the police station or Crime Stoppers, that would help the investigation.”

Police have also called for any CCTV from nearby properties, that might assist the investigation, to be made available to them.

Acting Sgt Trimby said youth had been congregating in the area in greater numbers since the start of the school holidays, but that it was unusual for this type of incident to occur in Shepparton.
