In what Chris described as a privilege to undertake, the activity’s aim was to not only raise money for Can Assist, but to raise the organisation’s profile in the area.
Chris raised more than $6,000 with his bowling effort, but said the increased profile Can Assist received was just as important.
“It was a real privilege to channel my chosen sport to raise money and the profile of Can Assist to help local people,” he said.
“It was a privilege to be able to do something for Can Assist and the people going through a cancer journey.
"The money is what keeps the organisation going, but the profile is what people recognise for doing such great work.“
Chris said it was “jolly cold” when he started, just 3.2 degrees, and it was about the same when the day finished.
After the 12-hour bowling challenge, Chris said with a laugh that he felt “not the best”.
“I’d forgotten how old I was,” he said.
“I did have a hot shower and sit in the massage chair when I got home.”
The Tocumwal Can Assist branch is committed to ensuring all people have access to cancer treatment and care by providing accommodation, financial assistance and practical support.
In a quest to raise much needed funds to support these programs, the branch issued a ‘Can Do Challenge’ for the month of October.
Chris gladly accepted the challenge, and from 8am Sunday played against 12 dedicated bowlers in an endeavour to raise awareness of the volunteer organisation.
“The local support was brilliant,” Chris said.
“The Can Assist committee was there from 7.30 in the morning until after eight at night, when we drew the raffle.
“They were just fantastic.
“I had 12 bowlers against me for the 12 hours, who did one hour each, and 12 markers who set up the ends, so there were 24 helpers - it was just marvellous.
“We also had people come down and stay to watch, which gave me great encouragement.”
Chris is challenging other locals to start their own Can Do Challenge to raise funds and awareness of Tocumwal Can Assist.
