Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell says an elected Coalition government will immediately cease the shooting of brumbies in the Barmah and Alpine national parks.
Ms Lovell said the focus should be on trapping the horses for rehoming.
“An elected Matthew Guy Liberal Coalition government will put an end to Labor’s inhumane shooting and total eradication of the brumby,” she said.
“The Andrews Labor Government knows that its brutal control measures are cruel and inhumane, admitting as much with its secret agreements and extreme efforts to hide massacred carcases from public view.”
The Coalition has committed to managing the wild brumby population in a way that guarantees the welfare of animals.
The policy will involve an immediate end to culling by aerial and ground shooting, a thorough and more accurate assessment of the brumby population and management methods that focus on rehoming and veterinary intervention.
Protesters gathered at the steps of Victorian Parliament House on Wednesday, June 8, in opposition to the culling.
