Affectionately known as JB, John died recently after a short illness.
JB was an instrumental part of the board of Community Bank Tongala and Mathoura, serving with distinction and unwavering commitment.
JB joined the board as a director on January 30, 2014, and in 2019 he stepped into the role of deputy chair, before becoming chairman in 2020.
His leadership, vision, and tireless efforts helped shape the bank’s direction, ensuring its continued support of the local communities he so deeply loved.
Beyond his significant contributions to the bank, JB’s presence was felt across many community activities and organisations.
Whether cheering from the sidelines at local football and netball matches or lending his support to cherished local events like the Mathoura Speed Shear and the Mathoura and Tongala Bowls Club tournaments, JB’s passion for community spirit was unparalleled.
His dedication extended far beyond sports, as he played an active role in various community groups and initiatives.
JB held the position of trust member and secretary at Tongala cemetery, was a life member and volunteer at the Tongala Football Netball Club, and supported many local organisations, including:

• Member and volunteer at Tongala RSL.
• Volunteer at Tongala Community Activities Centre and volunteer at Friends of Tongala Aged Care.
• Supporter of Mathoura Football Netball Club.
• Member and volunteer at Echuca-Moama Arts Initiative.
• Member and supporter of Melbourne Football Club.
• Volunteer at Voices for Nicholls.
• Passionate supporter of local schools, attending annual presentation nights to give out awards.
• Supporter of the Boys to the Bush program at Tongala and St Patrick’s primary schools, Tongala.
JB’s contributions to the community were immense, and his impact immeasurable.
His kindness, leadership, and unwavering dedication to making a difference in the lives of others have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
John Charles Bentley was one of a kind — a true community champion whose presence will be deeply missed, but whose legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
