Groups from across the community come together to help run each event, often helping to raise vital funds.
Echuca Lions Club president John Patterson said the news couldn’t have come at a worse time for the twin towns.
“We use the Southern 80 as one of our major fundraisers for the year like so many other groups in our community do,” he said.
“It means we won’t be able to give out as much money as we usually do, which is really disappointing.
“There is nothing our members enjoy more then being able to help out people when they need it.
“In the end, the community is going to suffer as a result of these cancellations.”
Echuca United is just one of several sporting clubs that put time and effort into the events — running the bar at the 2020 Southern 80.
President Ian Johnson said he was feeling for other clubs who weren’t going to be able to raise money after a difficult 2020.
“These types of events always give us a massive financial boost,” he said.
“In the past, they’ve gone on to improve a number of different areas at our club, including installing new seats around the netball courts.
“Hopefully the community can work together to get through this tough period we are all facing.”
