Coolabah Turf has promised $20,000 in recovery grants to support not-for-profit community organisations, its entire allocation of turf grants available for the current financial year.
The Echuca-based turf company will donate vouchers to community organisations, which can then be auctioned or raffled off, with the money raised from that sale going to flood victims.
For Coolabah Turf communications and marketing coordinator Stacey Fraser, the gesture is one way for the local business to give back to its community.
“The priority right now is the health and wellbeing of our families, friends and neighbours, and rebuilding those homes, businesses and community infrastructure that have sustained water damage,” Mrs Fraser said.
“But we’ll also be here to support our customers in every way we can to help them bring their water-damaged lawns back to life.”
Floodwaters have surged from the Campaspe, Murray and Goulburn rivers in recent weeks, inundating hundreds of homes and impacting thousands of properties in both Victoria and New South Wales.
River levels and floodwaters have been slowly receding, but the impact of the torrents are likely to be felt for weeks to come.
Mrs Fraser said the flooding had had a devastating impact on the community, adding that the grants were a chance for Coolabah Turf to play a small part in the clean-up.
“This is such a heartbreaking time for those who have been directly affected by the floods, for those whose friends, family and loved ones have lost everything, and for entire communities who have played a pivotal role in helping prepare their towns for the unknown,” she said.
“In contrast to the overwhelming sadness we are all feeling, it has also been a humbling and heartening experience to witness our incredible communities in both the Murray and Campaspe shires rally together during this crisis to protect homes, businesses and livelihoods.”
Applications for the grants from Coolabah Turf are now open, with the recipients to be announced on Tuesday, January 31, 2023.
