The partnership will be focused on assisting Kyabram business owners in completing a self-assessment.
Council and Kyabram police will be providing tips and prevention measures that can be taken to improve security.
The program will see a crime prevention officer from Victoria Police visiting businesses in Kyabram to discuss basic crime prevention measures.
Council community general manager Keith Oberin said the police and council partnership would help distribute the Victoria Police business security kit, which includes a self-assessment tool.
The kit covers a range of topics including:
● Aggressive people and how to deal with the situation.
● Cash handling, the cash register itself, how to store and transport cash.
● Credit card fraud and electronic crime.
● Closed circuit television and where and how to use it.
● How to minimise graffiti.
● Theft — from employees as well as from the shop.
“The kit also provides an incident report form and description form to help business owners capture an incident, which can be used to help solve a crime,” Senior Sergeant Peter Wardell said.
“The review will take business owners through a self-assessment to uncover areas of potential vulnerability and learn what actions can be taken to reduce the risk of crime.
“The Business Security Kit, developed by Victoria Police, will be used to provide business owners with helpful steps that business owners can take themselves to increase business safety.”
Mr Oberin said the Kyabram program was developed on the back of a petition by Echuca businesses in 2018 calling for improvements to business security.
“All business owners in Kyabram are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity and learn what steps can be taken,” Mr Oberin said.
“The program was well received in Echuca and highlighted the opportunity to expand into other townships.”
Businesses in Kyabram CBD will be visited on Tuesday, June 1, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.
In addition, business owners can book a free appointment for a date and time that suits them by contacting council’s customer service team on 1300 666 535.
