“I’ve lived in Kialla, earlier on in my career, but in the last couple of years, I finally bought a block of land in Seven Creeks,” he said.
Mr Brophy said living in the area wasn’t his only connection to the ward.
“I play tennis with the Kialla Park Old Students Tennis Club, lining up for my 35th season, my Rotary club meet across the road at the Peppermill on a weekly basis and my wife has worked at the aged care facility in Kialla for more than 15 years,” he said.
This isn’t his first council election, having been a councillor for the past four years and deputy mayor for two of them.
“I've got the experience and the skills that are needed, particularly with the new council coming in and with a lot of challenges that we’ve already got in front of us,” Mr Brophy said.
“We’ve gone to a new ward system, haven’t had that for over 30 years, so it’s going to be unique for many people.
“I think it will be a challenge for Greater Shepparton to see how the new ward system goes and see how that develops.
“I’m intrinsically sewn into that particular ward, but really, you’re advocating for everybody, so you’ve got to have a wider vision than just your own ward.”
He said that if elected, he would want to be an advocate for several issues, not only for his ward but the council area as a whole.
“One is the infrastructure, in Kialla Ward but also Greater Shepparton as a whole,” he said.
“There’s also real demand on land use, whether it be for residential, renting or buying, or building.
“Zoning and land use is really absolute paramount in getting that right.”
He said he loved the area because it was home, the place he had known the most.
“I love Greater Shepparton,” he said.
“I’ve grown up here all my life, I’ve schooled here, I’ve raised a family here, I know the place just so well.
“We want to make sure Greater Shepparton is the most liveable regional city in Victoria.”
