In the next two months, the Berrigan and Moira shire councils expect to release a discussion paper around their advocacy for dialysis in the region.
Berrigan Shire Mayor Julia Cornwell-McKean said her council knew access to dialysis locally was an important issue for the community.
“We really want the community to know we’re aware of this issue,” Cr Cornwell-McKean said.
“We support the grass-roots campaign to get dialysis locally.”
Chief executive Matthew Morgan said Moira Shire Council was working with its Berrigan counterpart to develop a discussion paper to present to relevant decision makers in both the NSW and Victorian governments.
“Currently locals across Moira and Berrigan need to travel to Shepparton, Yarrawonga, Albury, Deniliquin or Wagga Wagga for access to dialysis services,” Mr Morgan said.
“As advocates for our community, once we’ve had feedback from our local health providers, we’ll finalise the discussion paper with Berrigan Shire and present this to the relevant departments and ministers within each state government.
“Pending feedback from other key organisations we would be aiming for this to be presented at the May council meeting at latest.”
Matthew Morgan has confirmed Moira Shire Council expects the discussion paper to be presented in May at latest.
Kidney Support Group Cobram and District founder Dianne Raco said it was encouraging to read the two councils were finally supporting its campaign for a local dialysis unit in Cobram.
“Whilst the Kidney Support Group Cobram and District is very happy to support Cr Cornwell-McKean’s bus initiative, our primary and continued focus will always be a permanent six-chair dialysis facility in Cobram, an additional service that can be offered by Cobram Hospital, to be utilised by residents of both the Moira and Berrigan shires,” Mrs Raco said.
“Again, the KSGCD has always and will continue to support any efforts for local dialysis services and appreciates the support of both Moira and Berrigan shire councils. We look forward to being a part of the effort in any way we can and attending the May council meeting.”
