The word ‘epiphany’ comes from the Greek epiphania, meaning ‘manifestation’ or ‘showing’.
This feast originally commemorated several key events in Jesus' life — His birth, the visit of the Magi, His Baptism and the miracle at Cana.
Today, its focus is on the visit of the Magi, who followed a star to find the newborn King.
The Magi, often called kings or wise men, were seekers of truth from foreign lands. Their journey symbolises that Jesus’ light is not limited to Israel but shines for all nations.
Guided by a star, they placed their trust in God’s direction, even without fully understanding the path ahead.
In our modern world, we rely on GPS and other technologies to find our way or locate lost items.
But imagine seeking something truly significant without these tools.
The Magi remind us of the importance of trusting in divine guidance — whether it comes through inspiration, wise counsel or inner conviction — to lead us to what truly matters: the light of Christ in our lives.
Pope Francis calls the Epiphany a time to recognise God’s presence and share His light with the world.
Like the Magi, who offered their gifts to honour Jesus, we are called to bring our offerings — our talents, kindness and love — to reflect God’s goodness and brighten the lives of others.
This year, as we reflect on the Feast of the Epiphany, we also look forward to an extraordinary celebration in our community: the 150th anniversary of St Mary’s Parish in May.
This milestone is a time to honour the ‘stars’ — the Augustinian priests, Diocesan clergy, Brigidine Sisters and countless parishioners — who have illuminated our community with their faith and service.
Over generations, they have shaped St Mary’s into a vibrant parish rooted in Christ’s mission of love and compassion.
As we prepare to celebrate this anniversary, let us draw inspiration from the Magi.
Just as they brought their gifts to the Christ child, may we offer our gifts to continue Jesus’ work in Echuca.
Let us recognise the light of those who came before us and strive to be beacons of hope, love and faith in our time.
In this epiphany, ask yourself: What gifts can I bring to honour Jesus? Whether through acts of kindness, compassion or joy, each gesture becomes a gift that spreads His light in our world.
And as we look forward to celebrating St Mary’s 150th anniversary, may we recommit ourselves to being the light of Christ in our community and beyond.
Let us pray that we, like the Magi, may follow the star of Christ’s light and bring our gifts to Him.
In doing so, may we continue to be instruments of hope and love, shining brightly for all to see.
